Using Search Engine Traffic to your Advantage

If you want to thrive in your online business, take advantage of the information superhighway or the Internet via the search engines.

You can do this in two ways: by getting your site ranked for free on the left side of the results pages or by placing a paid ad for your site on the right side of the results pages. My suggestion is to create both.

Free ‘organic’ traffic is traffic that comes to your website as a result of individuals searching various keywords related to and/or found within the content of your website. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that you include good keywords within the content of your website.

For example, what will people who want wicker furniture type into a search engine?

Your keywords should be interlaced in various areas, such as within articles on your website, within the URL of different pages on your website, within the titles of your website pages and within the metatags.

It’s also a good idea to have the content or articles on your website include information regarding, for example, wicker furniture, such as how to clean it and general information on the upkeep of wicker furniture. Additionally, include keywords that are related to our site in the title tag of your HTML pages. This helps the page rank of your website and Web pages within the search engines.

Okay, how do you discover exactly what keywords people are searching for?

http://www.goodkeywords.com will let you do just that. All you need to do is type in a word and click ‘Go.’ It then shows you how many people searched for that exact word in the last month.

Another way to build free search engine traffic involves linking. Search engines favor websites that have numerous inbound links pointing to them. If other websites have links pointing to your website, you will be ranked higher within the search engines. The more links you have, the higher your page rank will be. The higher your website is listed in the search engine, the better.

There are two different types of linking, reciprocal linking and link swapping. Link swapping is simply swapping links with another party. For example, I might have ‘http://lucrativelistbuilding.com’ and want to swap links with ‘http://listopt.com’ and vice versa, that is a reciprocal link.

The best type of link is what is called a ‘one-way inbound link. The best way to do this is to use two of your own websites and contact a third party. For example, at ‘http://listopt.com, I might have a one-way link pointing to ‘http://thirdpartydomain.com’. Then the Third Party domain would have a one-way link pointing to the lucrative list building site. These are not reciprocal links, they are only pointing inbound to your website.

Another way to increase your traffic is the use of a Pay per Click search engines such as Google AdWords. You bid for keywords and if your bid is the highest, then your ad gets listed at the top of the right side of the results page when someone searches for a particular word. It’s a great way to bring in a ton of traffic and build a huge list of targeted subscribers.
